Below is the information from the 2011 Science Enrichment Program

Week 1: Earth Science

Preschoolers and Kindergarteners can't talk enough about the earth and the fascinating things they have already discovered at such a young age. Our earth science camp will center around the day and night sky, and earth materials such as rocks, water, soil, and air. We will have fun doing activities involving the moon, sun, stars and their favorite-rainbows. The take home projects will be GREAT! Expect things like oceans in a bottle, rock trains , volcanoes, moon rocks, and special weather instruments! We will probably even cook our own rocks or eat some dirt pudding. Maybe even add some worms!

Pictures from Week 1

Computer Lab Day 1: Volcano Pictures: Enjoy the volcano pictures we drew today using the paint program on the computer. (I apologize if we are missing any, some kids REALLY liked the eraser!). We also watched a volcano video and built and exploded volcanoes online. If you would like to continue these ideas at home, please visit these sites: Volcano Movie, Build a Volcano.

Computer Lab Day 2: Videos - Gardening with Elmo, Mother Nature: We played several games from familiar children's websites themed around gardening or rocks/soil. Telly's Shape Garden, from PBS kids; Moon Rock Mix-Up with the Little Einstein's; Grab the Carrot with Winnie the Pooh; and Back at the Barnyard Farming Frenzy! The first two games are for our younger kids and all four were entertaining for the older group.

Computer Lab Day 3: Videos - Earth Day Kids Part 1 and Marcus Hits the Bottle: We visited the Weather Channel Kids Site and talked about today's forecast, Radar and Satellite images, and then we looked at pictures of cyclones! Games included Weather Wheel, and Light and Shadows from Sid the Science Guy; Weather Transformer with Cat in the Hat; and the other game we did not get to was Nocturnal Hat Hunt.

Week 2: Physical Science

Let's use our five senses to make some fascinating discoveries. We will "cook-up" some fun solids and liquids in the kitchen and mix up some real gooey stuff. Your children will love using their senses to play games, sing songs, and make some cool things like egg sound games. We will make fascinating discoveries involving magnets, motion, and gravity. They will love making magnet puppets and cars that really roll.

Pictures from Week 2

Computer Lab Day 1: Grover's Health Minute - Teeth. We learned about our 5 senses, germs, and how to mix colors. Please visit these sites to play more with your kids: Sid I Sense, The Magic School Bus Gets an Earful , Color Mixing with George, Sandbox Symphony, The Germinator.

Computer Lab Day 2: Bert's Magnet Trick for the little kids and a lesson on magnets for the big kids from Engineering Interact. We learned about magnets and how to tell which materials are magnetic. The little kids played an additional game with Mickey to learn about choosing the right tool in your toolbox: Sid's Collection Jar, Magnets and Springs , and Clubhouse Rally Raceway.

Computer Lab Day 3: We watched a video from Sid the Science kid on Wheels and Friction. The kids played games to learn about friction, levers, balance, direction of force, and gravity: Fun with Friction, Balancing Act, and Move it or Luge It. The little ones played the friction game as well as A Twiddlebug Adventure.

Week 3: Life Science

Preschoolers and Kindergarteners love animals so we will do a lot of activities involving the different characteristics of animals. How are animals alike and how are they different? Do they hop, swim or fly? Do they have scales, feathers or fur? Expect your child to bring home some fun mommy/baby games involving animals and some special animal math games. I will arrange to have some real LIVE animals brought in! As we study animals we will bring in the idea that some eat plants. This will allow us to talk about how plants and animals are alike and how they are different. We will end the week by making terrariums.

Computer Lab Day 1: What is a Habitat?. We talked about what our habitat is, how we are all living things and we are also animals. Plants are living things too, but they are NOT animals. We played games to explore what different animal habitats look like. We also talked about the differences between plants and animals and the parts of a plant vs. the parts of an animal. Games for the big kids: Where in the World and Habitat Builder. For the smaller ones: Where do Animals Sleep?, Snuffy Safari, and Wild Habitat. Both groups played Playing with Plants and Animals and Plant or Animal.

Computer Lab Day 2: We're a Family! Today was all about animal families - how we are the same and how we are different. We matched babies with their mommies and looked at pictures of newborn babies on Zooborns.com. Games for the big kids: Diego Field Journal, Animal Babies, and Polar Bear Plunge. For the smaller ones: Dora Saves the Farm, Diego's Railroad Rescue, and Diego's Arctic Rescue.

Computer Lab Day 3: Today was all about taking care of our environment. We talked about keeping our trees and water sources healthy so that our habitats would stay healthy for us to live in. Games for the big kids: Rainforest Rescue, Creek Cleanup, and Recycle Roundup. For the smaller ones: Dora's Mermaid Adventure and Olivia of the Deep.
